One In Three of Society’s Heroes Are Suffering from PTSD. What Is Being Done to Heal Them?

By IGI Global Scientific Publishing on Jan 12, 2023
Firefighter First responders in the United States work diligently tending to crises and emergency situations that are oftentimes distressing for all parties involved. As a result, more than 80% of first responders experience traumatic events on the job, according to the Institutes of Health Multi-Specialty Clinics. Emergency management personnel altruistically provide their assistance to those in need, but what damage is it doing to their mental health? Due to the challenges and dangerous situations they face on a regular basis, first responders are at a very high risk for developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 1 in 3 first responders suffer from PTSD as compared to 1 in 5 people within the general population. Additionally, studies show that symptoms of PTSD are displayed in an estimated 400,00 first responders, presenting in 15% of paramedics, 13% of rescue teams, 7% of firefighters, and 5% of police officers.
"The job of first responders is to respond to traumatic events – but as humans, these events often affect them as well as civilians. Recognizing the impact of trauma upon these brave heroes, this book highlights what we know and provides a roadmap for where we need to go – reducing stigma, improving treatment, and changing culture.” – Dr. Deborah C. Beidel, University of Central Florida, USA
In December of 2022, the Arizona State Governor announced the allocation of $26 million USD to organizations that are committed to the health and well-being of first responders and veterans. Heal the Hero Foundation will receive a majority of the funds to provide technology-based support, community education and training for thousands of first responders, veterans, and abuse survivors. How can we ensure that proven methods are used to support society’s heroes and ensure they have access to mental health care.
